Which kitesurfing techniques should a beginner work on?

Many people who are just starting out with kitesurfing wonder what they can do in order to make learning the sport easier. While there are some sports where the only rule of thumb is just to practice, practice practice, kitesurfing is not one of those sports. (Of course, lots of practice will definitely help you out). Kitesurfing requires so many difficult techniques that you’re going to have to build up some of these techniques before you start.

Experience with other water sports will be the most important thing that you can have, although it is not necessary. Not only that, but knowing other water sports will not be enough once you start actually kitesurfing. If kitesurfing is your first or one of your first water sports, then that just means that there are a few more techniques that you should work on mastering before you start.

As you can imagine, the most distinctive part of kitesurfing is the kite that you will be using to propel yourself through the water. As you can imagine, not having control of your kite could be disastrous, as it would mean that you would also have no control over where you are kitesurfing to.

In order to learn how to control your kite, you should purchase a training kite. While these are not particularly cheap, they should be affordable for most beginners. Using this training kite will make it much easier to learn what you need to later on. First, you should just work on being able to control the kite. Then, you should practice allowing the kite to drag you short distances.

If you do not have any experience with other water sports, then you will also need to work on your board techniques. You can do this by trying another water sport (like windsurfing or wakeboarding). Practicing with boards will also help you to figure out what boarding equipment is best for you.

After you have practiced these techniques, then you should know enough to be able to start kitesurfing. However, if you are very new to the sport, it is definitely recommended that you take kitesurfing lessons from an expert instead of trying to teach yourself.
