2-4 line kites
Often people will ask which one is better a 2 line or 4-line kite? Is there really a big difference? One of the most popular answers are, you better believe there is a difference and how many lines depends on how comfortable you are with controlling the wings of a kite instead of two ends.
Experienced kitesurfers will use 4 line kites which allows you greater flexibility to create faster turns and deployment. 2 line setups are generally used for beginners who do not understand the difference between each connection point. They just want to steer left and right. Although professionals prefer a 4-line setup there are many snags and hindrances that can occur with these types of lines. They can get tangled as well as cause problems deploying from in the water.
During your initial training you will be given a kite that has 2 lines that basically allows you to maneuver and overpower the surfer. You cannot slow down or reduce the power in a kite when its full sail. You have to reduce its speed by flying it into the above forward window. Once it has slowed down considerably, you can detach or bring down the kite safely.
4 line kites harness several parts of the kite itself. They each control a wing of the kite and depending on how much you understand how each wing works in tandem it is best to practice on the beach with a qualified instructor. One wrong move and you could deploy your kite and have to relaunch from within the water. You can also find yourself heading into the beach to retrieve your kite if you do not deploy properly.
All kites either 2 or 4 lines depend on the comfort and portability of each. The average lengths of these lines are around 40 meters for 4 line and 30 meters for 2 lines.
