Bi-directional boards

If you are planning to take up kitesurfing in the near future, you may want to first try out various boards before you make your first purchase. Usually most beginners will get their first experience riding on a directional board. Once they have mastered the wider and more flexible board they are sure to graduate to a bi-directional board.

The bi-directional boards are great because it eliminates the need to change or cross over feet when turning into a turn. You can basically jump and jibe whenever the opportunity presents itself. Most bi-directional boards come with foot straps, although some manufacturers require that you pay extra.

Some of the higher end models also come with the fins for the bottom for increasing both performance as well as the ride itself. Since the bi-directional boards have a slimmer body they provide a quicker ski-like ride and cut through waves and breaks seamlessly. If you are still getting used to sailing upwind, look no further than moving up to a bi-directional board. These boards provide the flexibility to turn upwind with out any other footwork necessary.

Looping is also simpler to do as the footwork and change over are at a minimum. Just apply the right speed and jump into the turn and you should pull through nicely. Once you have experienced a ride on a bi-directional, you will prefer this type of board anytime.

Professional setups are usually bi-directional boards as they have a sleeker design and give a much more forgiving ride in comparison to the directional board. Not to mention the tremendous lift potential as the board comes in around 2 – 3 kg in weight. Brunotti sells two very popular models of bi-directional boards including the Python 185 and the Viper 160.

If you are beginning you should seek a professional certified instructor who will show you the tricks of kitesurfing. Once you feel comfortable enough then you can move up to a bi-directional board. As with any sport, exercise extreme caution and wear a floating device to keep buoyant if the board or kite gets away.
