Directional boards

You are charged up and ready to get surfing, you may have already purchased your kite and need an excellent surfboard. You are unsure which manufacturer provides the best overall product and most of all; you aren’t sure which board type you should get.

If you are a beginner a directional board is for you! Directional boards are light and float well. This will be helpful later on when you wipe out. A popular reason for purchasing a directional board is its ability to steer upwind and being able to switch directions accurately and without too much effort.

You may also want to use a directional board for safety features. Most directional boards are much wider and can be up to a few meters in length. Inexperienced surfers will find the directional boards are choppier with violent weather conditions. The board seems to take on a life of its very own.

As with kitesurfing in general the only real way you will know if you like the board or not is to test drive it. Some of the schools that teach kitesurfing will have the newer boards on hand. You can demo the board and test it for overall performance and activity. Should you like the board you can find out the make and style and search for one at your local ski shop or sports store.

Directional boards can still perform the same tricks and stunts. You can still Jibe, Loop and Jump until your hearts content. You are also prone to making quick changeovers and switching direction upwind. Remember with all safety precautions to wear a flotation device should the board or kite get away.

Manufacturers like Brunotti offer 2 and 3 strap boards, what is the difference? There are 2 or 3 bootstraps on the board itself. Some manufacturers offer bindings or bootstraps. Bindings are an excellent choice however, some people feel they are a bit awkward and prefer the bootstraps. Whichever fits you better is the one you should use. If you are unsure, you may want to start with a used directional board until you have the hang of it.
