Framed single skin kites

Should you choose to deploy a more rigid kite you may want to think about using a fiberglass edged frame single skin kite. These kites keep their shape and rigidity by the sheer design. Although many people find the inflatable kites easier to maneuver and launch from within the water, other people like the look and feel of the framed single skin kite. There is definitely a visible difference between the two of them.

A framed single skin kite has a fiber-glassed edge with the main batten and several smaller battens that give the kite its unique and rigid shape. Unlike inflatable kites the framed single water launch will take practice in the beginning. Once you have mastered it you will find its reliable and satisfactory performance record is second to none. There has been great progress made in newer framed singles that make it much easier to deploy from the water.

Should you lose control or wipe out, the framed single often can crash a hundred feet away, that is why it is good to have an easy retrieval reel attached to your bar. Thus, you won’t have to swim an extra few feet to get your kite back. When the kite does lose power it often remains flat in the water until you can get the lines squared away for another water launch.

Most framed single skin kites run in the $ 500 - $1500 range, you may be able to pick one up cheaper used. Make sure that you also purchase a floating device, harness, bar with retrieval system and a quality board. An entire setup can cost up to $1,500 if purchased used. Most ski shops always have used equipment as well as eBay, which also have many quality products for sale at a fraction of the price.

Beginners will usually experience their first few rides with an inflatable kite. Most kitesurfing schools may have framed single skin kites on hand to test drive should you wish to deviate away from the popular inflatable kite. Make sure that your instructor is certified in kitesurfing.
