Depending on which type of kite to choose from may be a bit daunting in the beginning, there are so many manufacturers of quality kites which one should you choose? The answer is always the one you are most comfortable with flying.
Ram air foil kites have no predetermined form. They aren’t rigid they are flexible to accept wind at different angles. The kite takes it shape with help from the wind and have been said to mimic airplane wings while in flight. These kites have been considered flexible and aerodynamic as they can slice through wind and hold their shape in almost any condition.
Ram air foil kites have become popular, as they have been on the market for a long time. At one time, surfers were unable to launch their ram air foil kites from within the water. Since they are now designed with better material it is easier than ever to get back on your board and keep the kite up in the air. Most beginners may ride a ram air foil kite with a 2-line setup and intermediate surfers will harness the tip and wings with a 4-line setup.
The trained kitesurfer should have a quick release safety system attached should they need to bail out or knock the kite down. Since these models are also considered a “closed cell” foil kite should the kite fall from the sky it should keep most of its shape and air so that the surfer can get it back up again with little or no effort.
Most models such as the Ozone Friendly and Guerilla 2 have been popular in the past few years. Other manufacturers such as Peter Lynn’s Flexifoil Storm III have also caught a lot of people’s attention. A ram air foil kite can run you from $500 – $1500 depending on what material it is made out of as well as if it is a 2 or 4 line system. Most models are launched from the beach first but some surfers still love to get in the water before taking off with the kite. Practice launching and landing your kite as often as possible and you should have little if no problem when you are out on the water with it.
