Collision avoidance
Kitesurfing is a fun sport but it is also very dangerous. You should always think about the safety when you are kitesurfing. There are many safety issues that you need to worry about, but one of the most important ones is collision avoidance. Collision avoidance is especially important when you are kitesurfing at the locations where there are many other kitesurfers. You will need to learn and follow several important collision avoidance techniques. Many of collision avoidance techniques rely on common sense. If you think that you are in a problematic situation that can result in collision, think clearly and select the most appropriate collision avoidance technique.
The best collision avoidance advice is to give up your right of way by
yielding to any person, object, or vehicle that can result in a collision
situation. If you have your right hand forward (Starboard Tack) while
kitesurfing, you generally have the right of way. For example, with this
collision avoidance technique, when two kitesurfers meet in a possible
collision situation, the kitesurfer with the left hand forward should
give way to the kitesurfer with the right hand forward. Kitesurfer with
the right hand forward has the right of way with this collision avoidance
technique in this situation.
Another collision avoidance technique deals with the possible collision
situation when two kitesurfers meet and they both have the right hand
forward. In this situation the collision avoidance technique says that
the kitesurfer who is most upwind should give way to the kitesurfer who
is most downwind. If two kitesurfers find themselves in a situation that
may lead to the kites colliding, the collision avoidance technique says
that the upwind kitesurfer should fly his or her kite as high as possible,
and the downwind kitesurfer should fly his or her kite as low as possible.
Another one of the collision avoidance techniques says that the kitesurfer
should give way to anyone he or she is overtaking. The kitesurfer who
is being overtaken has the right of way with this collision avoidance
technique, and is accountable for keeping course while being overtaken.
These are just several of the most important collision avoidance techniques.
